User Studies and Research Methods

Data Archive Brain Initiative (DABI) - USC neuroscience cloud data repository to organize, analyze, disseminate, and visualize Data. Conducted research with user and usability tests to gather insights through unmoderated methods, as well as moderated interviews.

Maze - recorded to better understand users' workflow and behavioral patterns
Usertesting - unmoderated usability study with talking-out-loud recorded sessions
Qualtrics - reached out with quick semi-structured questions to solicit SUS feedback
Key issues and insights from user feedback -

Issue 1 - no guidance while users need to figure out where to start, what to do next, and why?
Issue 2 - during onboarding, what are the steps and what is the end value using DABI?
Issue 3 - difficult search function or lack of quick start guide to begin workflow.
Issue 4 - to aggregate, propagate, and generate data in one platform.
Recommendation After Research
Synthesized user insight and feedback from interviews and focus groups, with heuristic analyses, below are optimizations to improve user experience, get rid of assumption, with clearer direction.

Rec 1 - inform users with infographic to demonstrate features with end result expectation.
Rec 2 - recommendation dashboard as Call-to-Action to guide users find data quickly.
Rec 3 - recognition with imagery, iconography, and animation to better guide user experience.
Rec 4 - streamline search features to dynamically filter and suggest accurate workflow pipelines.
Rec 5 - consolidate files viewable and editable within platform and not leaving for third-party apps.

Measured Outcome and Impact

• Users are better able to search and pinpoint accurate data quicker through visual cues and workflow.

longer as generated files are viewable in-platform as opposed to 3rd-party apps.

better learning module and tooltips.
